Nowadays, educational success is considered one of the most important goals for young people, and many factors contribute to it. However, whether students’ academic achievements rely more on the quality of teachers or the character of the students themselves remains a controversial issue. My view is that while both sides play a crucial role, the personal character of the student has a more long-lasting impact.
First, it is obvious that good teachers can guide and inspire students to reach their full potential. A professional and dedicated teacher not only delivers knowledge effectively, but also motivates learners to develop a positive attitude toward learning. For example, in many top-performing schools, teachers often use creative methods and give personal attention to help weaker students catch up. Without such guidance, students may feel lost or discouraged in their studies. Therefore, high-quality teaching is certainly a strong driving force for academic improvement.
Moreover, actually, a student’s character and learning habits determine whether they make full use of the help provided by teachers. For instance, if a student lacks self-discipline, curiosity or perseverance, even the best teacher cannot guarantee their success. On the other hand, a hardworking and determined student can achieve high grades even in less ideal learning environments. Many real-life stories of students from underdeveloped regions succeeding in national exams show how far strong personal character can take them.
That is not to say that student success depends entirely on themselves. In fact, character traits such as motivation and confidence can be shaped by teachers in the early stage of education. Good teachers often act as role models, helping students to build positive values and belief in their ability. However, once the student grows older, personal responsibility becomes increasingly important for continuous academic progress.
In sum, both good teaching and student character are essential to educational success. But in my opinion, the student’s own efforts, attitude and mindset play a more decisive role, especially in the long term. While teachers can open the door, it is ultimately the student who must walk through it.
