Some people choose to have their first child at an older age.

Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Nowadays, in many societies, there is a noticeable trend that more individuals delay parenthood and choose to have their first child at an older age. However, whether this change brings more benefits than drawbacks remains a topic of debate. My view is that although it may involve certain risks, the advantages of late parenthood still outweigh the disadvantages.

First, it is obvious that the main reason for delaying childbirth is the increasing pressure of career and education. Nowadays, many people, especially women, pursue higher education and professional development, which often requires years of dedication. As a result, they may not consider starting a family until they achieve a certain level of job stability and financial security. This ensures a more stable environment for raising children.

Moreover, actually, having children later can be beneficial for both parents and children. For example, older parents tend to be more emotionally mature and financially prepared, which contributes to better parenting. Also, they are often more focused on family life after experiencing personal growth and career achievements. With better income and social support, they can offer higher-quality education and care for their children.

That is not to say that having children at a later age is without risks. From a biological perspective, older mothers may face health issues during pregnancy, and the risk of complications, such as infertility or genetic disorders, may increase. Furthermore, older parents might have less physical energy to engage with their children and may not live long enough to witness their children’s important life events. But fortunately, modern medical advancements and healthy lifestyles can help mitigate many of these issues.

In sum, although delaying parenthood may cause certain health-related or generational challenges, the benefits of being more prepared—mentally, emotionally and financially—are undeniable. Only by planning carefully and making informed decisions can people ensure a better future for themselves and their children.
