To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Nowadays, the role of teachers in schools has sparked widespread debate. While some people insist that teachers should concentrate mainly on academic teaching, others believe that inspiring students should also be a key part of their responsibility. My view is that although academic instruction is the core task, motivating students plays an equally vital role in modern education.
First, it is obvious that academic learning forms the foundation of a student’s future. This is because knowledge in subjects such as mathematics, science and language is essential for passing exams, entering universities and later finding decent jobs. As a result, teachers are expected to deliver high-quality lessons and help students achieve academic success, which is still the main goal of most education systems around the world.
Moreover, actually, motivation and inspiration are what enable students to truly succeed in the long term. For example, some students may have great potential but lack the confidence or interest to study hard. In such cases, a few encouraging words or support from a teacher can make a huge difference. If teachers only focus on textbooks and ignore students’ emotional needs, it is likely that some learners will lose direction, drop out, or feel stressed. Motivation, therefore, acts as the fuel behind academic achievement.
That is not to say that academic excellence will come naturally if students are simply motivated. Without solid teaching and proper assessment, it is hard to measure progress or ensure students reach required standards. But fortunately, motivation and academics are not in conflict. A good teacher can explain difficult knowledge while also building positive relationships and encouraging independent thinking.
In sum, teaching academic subjects remains a fundamental duty of educators. Meanwhile, we should not overlook the importance of motivating students. Only by balancing both aspects can teachers help learners grow both intellectually and personally, preparing them well for challenges beyond the classroom.
