Nowadays, many regions are witnessing the gradual disappearance of traditional festivals and celebrations, which were once central to people’s cultural identity. However, whether this trend will bring significant problems to society remains a controversial issue. My view is that the loss of traditional festivals can lead to serious cultural and social consequences, and efforts should be made to preserve these valuable customs.
First, it is obvious that the fading of traditional celebrations may result in the erosion of cultural heritage. These festivals are not only a source of joy, but also a way for younger generations to understand their history, values and beliefs. Without such cultural expressions, young people may lose touch with their roots, and societies may become more homogenised under the influence of globalisation. As a result, unique local identities could vanish, leading to a loss of cultural diversity worldwide.
Moreover, actually, traditional festivals also play an important role in strengthening social bonds. For example, family gatherings, community events and religious rituals create a sense of belonging and unity among people. If these occasions disappear, individuals may feel more isolated, and communities may become less connected. This could eventually weaken social cohesion and increase the sense of loneliness, especially among older people who value such traditions most.
That is not to say that modern life leaves no room for cultural practices. In fact, traditional and modern lifestyles can coexist harmoniously. Fortunately, many measures can be taken to support this coexistence. Governments can protect traditional festivals by offering funding, organising public events and incorporating them into national holidays. Schools can also play a role by educating students about the significance of local customs and encouraging their participation. In addition, media and technology can be used to promote traditional festivals through documentaries, online campaigns and interactive platforms.
In sum, the disappearance of traditional celebrations does cause serious problems for both cultural preservation and social connection. Meanwhile, these negative effects can be addressed if governments, schools and individuals all take responsibility. Only by working together can we ensure that traditional festivals continue to enrich our lives while adapting to the modern world.
