Some people think technology development decreases crime, while others believe it actually encourages crime.

Nowadays, technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace and gradually penetrating all aspects of human life, including security and criminal activity. However, whether it contributes to the reduction of crime or facilitates new forms of criminal behaviour remains a controversial issue. My view is that although technology can sometimes be misused for illegal purposes, it plays a more significant role in deterring and combating crime.
First, it is obvious that technological development has greatly strengthened law enforcement and crime prevention systems. This is because advanced surveillance equipment, facial recognition, and big data analysis enable police to identify suspects and solve cases much more efficiently. For example, CCTV networks in public places can serve as a strong deterrent against theft or vandalism. Additionally, cybersecurity tools help protect individuals and institutions from fraud, hacking and online scams. As a result, many crimes that were difficult to detect or investigate in the past can now be addressed more effectively.
Moreover, actually, the use of digital technology can also raise public awareness and promote safety. For instance, people can report suspicious activities through mobile apps or access real-time crime alerts in their area. Governments and communities, by leveraging technology, can build safer environments while encouraging civic participation in crime prevention. Therefore, technological progress not only supports the police, but also empowers ordinary citizens.
That is not to say that technology development will eliminate crime entirely. On the contrary, some people argue that technology creates new opportunities for criminals. Online crimes such as identity theft, ransomware attacks and deepfake fraud have emerged as serious threats. Furthermore, criminals may exploit encrypted communication tools to coordinate illegal activities while avoiding detection. But fortunately, with continuous upgrades in digital security and stronger international cooperation, most of these threats can be addressed.
In sum, although the advancement of technology does present some new challenges in the fight against crime, its overall effect on public safety is positive. By improving surveillance, enhancing data analysis, and fostering public cooperation, technology has become an indispensable tool for reducing crime in modern society.
